About Isthmus Players

Isthmus Players aims to be Madison’s newest home for comedy, dedicated to teaching and performing improv, sketch writing, stand-up, and late-night comedy. Comedy is a skill anyone can develop, and Isthmus Players provides a space where creativity thrives, risks are encouraged, and performers grow together.

This wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of Mynda Lynn, owner of Variations Dance Studio, who has graciously opened the studio’s doors to host our classes and workshops. Through this partnership, Isthmus Players is bringing new opportunities to Madison’s comedy community.

Meet the Founder

Dennis Kreger – Improv Performer, Instructor, and Comedic Writer

For over a decade, Dennis Kreger has been making people laugh (sometimes on purpose). He trained at Second City Las Vegas, completing their Conservatory program, and continued his comedy education at The Groundlings in Los Angeles, Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, and iO Chicago’s Late Night Writing program. He also studied with founding members of The Nerdist in LA and completed sketch writing at Second City Chicago.

Dennis started performing improv in 2006 in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. After training at The Groundlings and bouncing between Vegas and L.A., he moved to Chicago in 2016 to sharpen his comedic skills. While there, he dove into the stand-up scene, performing in and out of showcases for a year. His improv training includes working with Paul Mattingly (former Main Stage performer at Second City Las Vegas and host of the Matt and Mattingly’s Ice Cream Social Podcast), Liz Allen in Las Vegas, and Jimmy Carrane in Chicago. Having immersed himself in improv culture for years, Dennis has learned from some of the best and continues to refine his comedic approach.

Offstage, Dennis is the author of Golden Weakness: Platinum Failures, a satirical deep dive into business, politics, and the eternal truth that taxpayers always pick up the check. Be it on stage, in print, or in a classroom, he believes comedy isn’t just about making people laugh—it’s about making them think (and then laugh at what they were thinking).
